I have the education, experience, and training required to help you understand why you feel the way you do and teach you techniques for managing your situation.

LCSW and DCSW

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), a profession licensed by the State of Tennessee to practice mental health counseling. To get this license, a counselor must have a Masters Degree in Social Work from an accredited institution, work under the supervision of an LCSW for several years, and pass a rigorous test that verifies that the counselor has received the training and has the experience required to provide mental health counseling.

I received the Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (DCSW) from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in 1994. This credential certifies that I meet the highest standards of professional practice in mental health counseling. For more information about DCSW, please click here.

Education

I received a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSSW) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1984.

Experience

After graduation, I worked as a counseler at Lakeshore Mental Health Institute under the supervision of an LCSW. I received my license in 1989. After I received my license I served as the Knox County Mental Health Director from 1988 until the position was eliminated in 1996.

Training

I have received special training in these areas:

  • Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Anger Management
  • Drug and Alcohol Abuse Assessment
  • Elder Care
  • Bariatric Surgery Support

CISD is a treatment protocol for sudden stressful and life-changing events such as a job-related death or robbery. DBT is a technique for changing negative thought patterns. Anger management uses a set of techniques for not making a bad situation worse.
